VOS mapping and clustering software
The VOS mapping technique and the VOS clustering technique are techniques for mapping and clustering the nodes in a network. The VOS mapping technique (or layout technique) is related to the technique of multidimensional scaling developed in the field of statistics. The VOS clustering technique (or community detection technique) is related to the technique of modularity-based clustering developed in the field of physics. Together, the VOS mapping technique and the VOS clustering technique provide a unified and consistent approach for mapping and clustering the nodes in a network. The two techniques have proven very effective in analyzing all kinds of networks derived from bibliometric data. We refer to our publications for more information on the techniques.
The VOS mapping technique and the VOS clustering technique have both been integrated into VOSviewer. We also have stand-alone implementations of the two techniques. These implementations can be downloaded below.
| Implementation | Last update | Download |
|---|---|---|
| Command-line implementation (Windows executable) | January 8, 2013 | Download |
| Command-line implementation (C source code) | January 8, 2013 | Download |
| MATLAB implementation | January 23, 2012 | Download |
The above software is open source and may be freely used, distributed, and modified. Any feedback on the software is greatly appreciated.
We note that the VOS mapping technique and the VOS clustering technique are also available in the Pajek software for social network analysis.
